Should i play baldur's gate 1 before starting 2?

Will I miss much if I just start with bg2 (which I hear is a better game). I have both of them, but am having a bit of trouble getting into them. All I hear is how great 2 is and I absolutely like Dragon Age Origins, but bg2 and bg1 for that matter seem so archaic. Also the fact that they use 2nd edition rules is annoying to me (Icewind Dale 2 FTW). So any advice for a Baldur's Gate newbie? Is there a mod to make either one into 3rd edition rules by chance?|||i would play 1 then 2 because your characters from 1 carries over to 2.|||It's a lot easier to understand the story, and have a background on characters etc. if you play 1, then 2, and like above poster said, you can import your character from 1 to 2, and have a very continuous story line. It gets better with expansions too! Yeah they are old, but they were made using the same engine as IWD2...so "archaic" should be a good thing xD I agree that 3rd ed is the best, but 2nd ed isn't that bad (considered the original IWD was 2nd ed). I don't use mods though, so I can only say try checking some sites like gibberlings3.net, they might have some 3rd ed mods if you feel the need for them (although I kind of doubt there would be one, seeing how different 2nd and 3rd ed are, and considering Infinity engine was made for 2nd ed rules).|||All you need to know in (I'm assuming you mead Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance one and two) number one is the 3 heroes defeated Eldreth, who summoned the Onyx Tower, and left through the Baulder's Gate. They ended up in a forest surrounded by monsters and a guy in white armor captures them.

You don't really need to play the first, but I like it a lot more than 2.
